Steyn City Residence I

Steyn City Residence I is a five-bedroom family home situated within one of Johannesburg's most architecturally considered estate developments. The design responds to a north-facing street frontage that placed the garden and pool directly exposed to the street — a fundamental privacy constraint that the architecture resolves through a single continuous cantilevered roof plane.

That cantilever is the building's defining gesture. It extends beyond the envelope to define arrival, cast shadow, and establish the datum from which the entire street elevation is read. Beneath it, full-width glazing dissolves the ground floor boundary while the plane above maintains privacy and filters the relationship between interior and street.

The interior palette is warm and materially precise — an amber ceiling plane in the living areas, a fireplace pit set flush into the floor, terracotta tile in the master bathroom, and a covered patio that reads as a seamless extension of the living room. The house is designed to feel generous and calm at every scale.
